What’s The Best Bikini for Your Body Type?

Bikini shopping can be a very frustrating activity–especially when you don’t know the best bikini for your body type. Oh, and the horrendous lighting in those changing rooms certainly aren’t much help.

So before you make that next trip to the mall, here’s a guide to help you pick out the kinds of bikinis that are actually flattering for your body type:

1. Pear

Just like a pear, your body is wider on the bottom and slimmer up top. You have a smaller chest, wide hips, a defined waist, and probably a great backside. For pear-shaped body types, the best swimsuits are the ones that will draw attention to your top half and minimize your bottom half to balance out your proportions.

-Eye-catching tops, such as those with plunging necklines or ruffles.
-Full-coverage bottoms.
-Choose darker colors for your bikini bottoms, and ligher colors for your bikini top.

2. Inverted Triangle

The inverted triangle body type usually means you have a larger bust and wider shoulders, but a narrower bottom half. If this is your body type, you would need bottoms that would accentuate your lower half.

-Bikini bottoms with details that give the illusion of wider hips.
-Tops with underwire or thicker, adjustable straps for better bust support.
-Dark colored tops.

3. Straight

Straight body types have less curves–your top half and bottom half have the same proportions, and your waist is not well-defined. The best swimsuits for you would be the ones that create the illusion of more curves.

-Monokinis with strategically-placed cutouts.
-Tops and bottoms with eye-catching details, such as ruffles or fringes, to make your bust and hips look wider.

4. Hourglass

You are blessed with a perfectly proportioned body with a full bust and wide hips–think Kim Kardashian or Scarlett Johansson. Almost any bikini type will flatter your body, depending on what you want to achieve. If you want to emphasize your curves, string bikinis would be a good bet.

-Belted monokinis or monokinis with side cutouts to help accentuate your waist and define your hourglass shape.
-Choose monochromatic suits or suits with less eye-catching details if you don’t want to call too much attention to your assets.

5. Apple

This body shape means you carry most of your weight in your middle, so the best suits for you would be anything that would de-emphasize your midsection and create the illusion of a more defined waist.

-Bikinis or monokinis that are belted to help create a defined waist.
-High-waisted bottoms for more tummy control.
-Embellished tops or bottoms, depending on which part of your body you want to enhance and draw attention to.

Whatever shape you may be, the key is to know what you want to conceal and you want to enhance.
