SUN, SURF AND SURF PROVIDE A BEAUTIFUL BACKDROP FOR YOUR SUMMER SHINDIG

FIRST GLANCE
Few of us are lucky enough to have beachfront houses along the Malibu coast or Australia’s Bondi Beach. But geography doesn’t have to preclude you from hosting a sizzling end of summer soiree. Any public beach with clean sand and cool water for splashing around in can serve as an idyllic setting for a fun-filled Saturday afternoon. Choose a spot that allows bonfires and you have instant ambiance after sunset.

IN THE DETAILS
Summer entertaining should be casual. Skip the complicated recipes and opt for dishes that feature fresh seafood and seasonal fruits a veggies. Keep decorations to a minimum. Fashion a cozy spot for lounging, and create a bit of shade with a few boldly colored blankets and a patterned beach umbrella. Pack up your drinks and snacks picnic style in an extra large cooler or basket, and bring along buckets for building sand castles or a volleyball net for an impromptu competition. For soft lighting after dark, plant a few solar- powered tiki torches in the sand.

WHAT TO WEAR
Splurging on the right bikini-one that hugs your curves and leaves minimal tan lines- a must for summer frolicking. Top it with a breezy sundress or gauzy tunic when you’re hanging out at the beach. Pack a comfy shawl for when the sun goes down.

SIPS
Have plenty of chilled bottled water on hand so guests can stay hydrated, but keep things festive with a few summery cocktails too. Not every beach allows alcohol, so nix no-no glass bottles or cans. Instead make a a “pop tail” by pouring your favorite summer cocktail or mocktail into icepop molds. (Williams-Sonoma has some great ones!) Pack these in a cooler and you’re good to go!

MUSIC
Bring along your favorite tunes with a water-resistant portable sound system like the iHome boom box. Made for the iPhone, iPod, and Nano, this clever gadget allows you to manage your music without touching the player with wet, sandy hands.
