After having spent that last four years in prison for the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox walked free from the courtroom after her conviction was overturned on appeal.  Her family could not contain their jubilation and screamed with joy as the verdict was announced.  Various media organizations have been vying to interview Knox and secure the rights to her story.  Knox repeatedly also wrote an autobiography while in prison, a book that will no doubt swiftly be published and become a best seller.

From the beginning, the murder investigation was hampered by the shocking ineptitude of the Italian police, who repeatedly violated their own procedures, potentially contaminating the evidence as they collected it.  On appeal, the prosecution’s argument collapsed, with independent experts arguing conclusively that the evidence did not support the theory that the prosecution presented at the first trial.

Beneath the media circus, the tearful families, and the voices of the persecution and the defense, a single voice has been lost—that of Meredith Kercher who, at the age of 21, died in a pool of her own blood.  No one is vying to hear her story, or that of her family.  Their suffering will go unheralded and unmourned, while Amanda Knox is transformed into a media star due to her association with their daughter’s murder.  Take a moment, if you please, to remember what this case should have been about—the murder of a beautiful young woman who, instead of having experiences that she could remember with fondness and joy for the rest of her life, ended up dying, alone, in a foreign land after having been brutally raped.  The tragedy of this case is not only that Meredith Kercher  was murdered, but that she has been forgotten, overshadowed by a roommate who never should have been accused of her murder, betrayed–via ineptitude and blatant shoehorning by the lead prosecutor–by those charged with discovering the truth about what actually happened to Meredith Kercher.
