Five Ways to Keep in Shape and Lose Weight at the Office

Everyone wants to lose weight and keep in shape, but not everyone has time to go to the gym.  Below is a list of five ways to keep in shape and lost weight at the office for those people who want to but don’t have the time to do exercise at the end of the day.

Man Walking Up the Stairs

  1. Park at the far edge of the parking lot in order to increase walking distance.
  2. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or, even if you’re on the seventeenth floor, take the stairs up a few floors and then take the elevator the rest of the way.
  3. Watch your posture; sitting up straight burns more calories than slouching.
  4. If possible stand rather than sit—it burns more calories.
  5. Unless it would be detrimental to your working life, take up fidgeting or pacing.  Both activities burn more calories than standing still.

Two People Walking Up the Stairs

The above list is not intended to be a comprehensive list of ways that you can incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.  It is intended to be a starting point, and to get you thinking about simple ways to increase your amount of physical activity during the day.  The principle is simple:  make things a little bit more difficult for yourself in ways that increase the amount of physical effort and energy that you need to expend.  Not everyone can be a fitness guru, or go to the gym for an hour each day; everyone, however, can take a few simple steps to improve their health.  So get up, get off your computer, and start taking these basic steps today.
