Dogs ARE NOT Fashion Accessories!

by - 1 Comment

Due, no doubt, to the plethora of celebrities sporting adorable little dogs peeking out of their handbags, normal people are now adopting the dogs-as-fashion-accessories trend as well.  Let anyone be in doubt about the matter—dogs are not fashion accessories!  Currently, shelters are seeing a huge increase in the number of former purse dogs that are being abandoned, as people realize that their adorable little accessories actually require some work.  Or, alternatively, when they decide to abandon yesterday’s fashion trends in favor of something more upbeat and hip.

Paris Hilton and One of Her Chihuahuas

Before I go on, I feel that I must come clean:  I am the proud owner of a part dachshund, part Chihuahua puppy, who has only ever been carried in an airline-approved dog carrier while in the airport or on an airplane.  She wears puppy clothing only when such attire is necessitated by the weather (short fur+ snow=a puppy sweatshirt or a sweater).  She is also a frequent visitor at a nearby dog park, where I have recently been delighted to observe her attempting to play with large dogs whom she would have been afraid of only a month ago.  Her existence, of course, is in sharp contrast with that of the purse puppies, many of who have never been allowed to be dogs and lack the ability to socialize with members of their own species.  Many of them are also utterly perplexed by the idea of something as simple as taking a walk.

Dogs are not fashion accessories—unlike a new handbag or bracelet, they require training, exercise, affection and care.  They can also live for ten-to-fifteen years.  It is utterly irresponsible and cruel to buy or adopt a dog when you lack the ability to care for it long term, and even more so when the dog is acquired only as the latest piece of bling to accentuate your outfit.

Please, people, allow your dogs to be dogs.  Let them play outside and get dirty.  Take them on walks, or to dog parks, where they can play with other dogs.  If you don’t have the time necessary to devote to owning a dog, don’t get one.  Dogs deserve our protection and respect, not to be shunted around like used playthings or clothing.

Great photos, they really serve to illustrate your points well. It just goes to show that fashion is in the eye of the beholder. Whilst I liked certain aspects on the design, some I would not wear.
