Summer “Love” vs. Summer “Fling”

summer love

Summer love can be a beautiful thing. You go live somewhere else for a summer, meet a great guy, fall head over heels in love and start thinking about your future together. But, um, one problem – this “future” together might be a little difficult considering you live 3,000 miles away. Once the distance issue sets in you have reached a turning point: summer “love” vs. summer “fling.”

This turning point is not a great place to be. A million questions are running through your mind. Can we make a long distance relationship work? Should I just stay away from him and save myself the heartbreak at the end of the summer? Do I even like him that much? How many kids are we going to have? Okay, maybe not that last one, but you are probably very confused. The good news is you only have two options to choose from.

Summer “Love:”

If you decide this guy is the real deal, it’s probably a good idea to have a serious talk with him. If you love him and want to stay together you need to make sure he loves you back and is feeling the same way. If he’s a typical guy he probably hasn’t thought past what’s on ESPN tonight, let alone what you two are going to do at the end of the summer. If you think bringing up the future will freak him out, all you can do is wait it out and see what happens. Good luck with that.

Summer “Fling:”

I hate to say it, but this is probably the more likely of the two options. Unless this guy is your soulmate (and there is that chance, don’t get me wrong!) a long-distance relationship based off three months of fun isn’t going to last long. That’s why it’s called a “fling.” You can always keep hanging out with him if you think you won’t be heartbroken come September, but my advice would be to keep your distance from the guy so you don’t get too attached. Or too much more attached I should say. Not much is worse than a broken heart and that’s not how you want to end your summer.

Whatever you decide to do, realize how lucky you are to have found someone you care about this much and cares about you in return. Some people don’t find love their whole life and you found it in one summer. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, so keep a smile on your face and think positive about your future!
