Afford Summer Clothes Without A Steady Income

Fashion Friday

Welcome to Fashion Friday! Every Friday, My10 will be coming to your fashion rescue – answering questions, giving tips and anything else you want.  If you have questions or ideas, please comment and let us know! Here’s this weeks question:

“I have an internship this summer and it’s unpaid. How can I afford summer clothes?”

Well, there’s actually a lot of things you can do! Being a server on the weekends, build a lemonade stand, stripping….. kidding! But seriously, there are a lot of options to afford new clothes on a minimal (or nonexistent) budget.

No matter where you’re interning at this summer, you have to be working around other people – right? Right. So, don’t be shy and talk to those people! Ask them if they need a babysitter or know someone who does. It seems like someone is always looking for a willing stranger to take the kids off their hands for a night or seven. Plus, you could get lucky and work for someone “fortunate” at your company and end up getting paid really well! You never know until you ask.

Another thing you can do is take cans and bottles to a redemption center. For those of you who don’t know what this is, a redemption center is a magical place where you take the empties from last night’s party and exchange them for cash. Pretty sweet, huh?  This may seem like a waste of time since each can or bottle is only around 10 cents, but all those empties add up quick – especially if it was a big party! Make sure to keep a labeled trash can around for cans and bottles so your guests can donate to your shopping fund.

Your final option may not be the most appealing, but it’s a realistic one: Save. Your. Money. Try and keep your spending to a minimum throughout the summer and put whatever extra cash you have at the end of the day into an envelope or jar. At the end of the summer you will have a decent chunk of cash saved up (hopefully) and you can treat yourself to a shopping spree! If you can’t wait until the end of summer, just wait until the envelope’s full – you shopping addict, you.
